Sri Lanka: A Journey I Never Expected

Sri Lanka: A Journey I Never Expected

Sri Lanka was a country I never imagined I’d visit, yet it turned out to be one of the most rewarding adventures I’ve ever had. From the lush green hills to the golden stretches of beach, every destination felt like stepping into a postcard. What truly made it special though was the warmth of the people, their smiles, stories and genuine hospitality that made me feel instantly at home.

Colombo and Kandy Highlights

My journey began in Colombo, a city full of life and character. The blend of colonial charm, colourful markets and welcoming locals gave me the perfect introduction to Sri Lanka’s spirit. From there I spent two nights in Dambulla where I climbed the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, explored the golden cave temples and watched elephants roam freely through Minneriya National Park, an experience I’ll never forget.

Reaching Kandy, the cultural heart of the island, was a highlight in itself. Visiting the sacred Temple of the Tooth was both humbling and awe-inspiring, and the traditional evening dance performances offered a vibrant glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and deep-rooted traditions.

That Famous Sri Lanka Train Journey

The train ride from Kandy to Ella felt like something straight out of a storybook. Rolling green hills, endless tea plantations and misty mountain views made it one of the most breathtaking journeys I’ve ever taken. Ella’s laidback charm was the perfect reward at the end and walking along the iconic Nine Arch Bridge was truly unforgettable.

Historic Forts & Beachside Bliss

No visit to Sri Lanka would be complete without time by the coast. Unawatuna and Galle struck the perfect balance between history and relaxation. Wandering through Galle Fort’s cobbled streets felt like stepping into another era while the beaches offered that perfect tropical escape with sun, sand and a fresh coconut in hand.

My Biggest Takeaway

What truly stood out wasn’t just the scenery but the people. The warmth, hospitality and genuine kindness of everyone I met made this trip so much more than a holiday. Sri Lanka’s beauty runs deep through its landscapes, its culture and its people, and it’s a place I know I’ll return to one day.

Sri Lanka isn’t just somewhere you visit, it’s somewhere that stays with you.
